|Replica 1837 Kirtland Currency $2.50|
|The United States went through a period of rapid economic expansion in the early 1830s, boosting the demand for money and credit. By 1835 the Ohio legislature stopped granting charters in an attempt to slow the growth of new banks. The Kirtland Safety Society Bank first issued notes on 6 January 1837. Since church members had been refused a charter the bank opened as the “Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Banking Company.” The bank eventually failed resulting in numerous lawsuits and creating dissension within the movement. |
